Muslim Advocates Statement on Midterm Election Results
November 4th, millions of Americans voted and decisively rejected two years of racism, cruelty, and unchecked executive power. Throughout this election cycle, politicians sought political gain by sowing division, including through hateful anti-Muslim rhetoric. They failed because communities nationwide organized and resisted, worked tirelessly to protect the vote, and refused to be intimidated into silence.
But bigotry is more than rhetoric: it drives government surveillance, investigation, and crackdowns against those it arbitrarily deems threatening, all in order to coerce compliance. Muslim communities know this all too well and have resisted it for years.
The next Congress has the power and the responsibility to not just stop the Trump regime’s abuses, but dismantle the policies that grant presidents unchecked powers.
Legislators must use their subpoena powers to investigate and hold accountable the Trump Administration for its violence and violations of Constitutional rights.
Congress must also use its power of the purse to cancel funds for the militarized police state, including immigration enforcement, surveillance, and weaponized law enforcement that has caused such extraordinary harm.
Muslim Advocates reaffirms its unwavering commitment to protecting the safety, dignity, and rights of Muslims and all targeted communities.
