Veteran Civil Rights Attorney Named New Legal Director of Muslim Advocates

“Bigots Better Watch Out for Mary Bauer”

WASHINGTON, DC — Today, distinguished civil rights attorney Mary Bauer was announced as the new legal director for Muslim Advocates, a national civil rights organization that works to stop bigotry in its tracks. Before joining Muslim Advocates, Bauer was the general counsel at migrant worker rights organization Centro de los Derechos del Migrante, Inc. She has also served as deputy legal director of the Southern Poverty Law Center’s Immigrant Justice Project, legal director of the SPLC, executive director of the Legal Aid Justice Center, and legal director of the American Civil Liberties Union of Virginia.

“Bigots better watch out for Mary Bauer,” said Muslim Advocates Executive Director Farhana Khera. “She is a seasoned civil rights expert, a brilliant litigator and a passionate advocate for the rights of all Americans. Her years of leadership on immigrants’ rights, hate crimes, civil rights and intersectional discrimination will give our community expert representation so that all people can live free from bigotry and discrimination.”

“I’m proud to be in service of this fearless, woman-led, Muslim-led civil rights institution,” said Bauer. “The Constitution is clear: all Americans are entitled to equal protection of the law and the ability to live our lives free from discrimination. At Muslim Advocates, our job is to take on any company, any government and any individual who seeks to break that promise.”

Muslim Advocates is a national civil rights organization working in the courts, in the halls of power and in communities to halt bigotry in its tracks. We ensure that American Muslims have a seat at the table with expert representation so that all Americans may live free from hate and discrimination.
