Nearly 70 Leading Civil Rights, Advocacy, and Faith Organizations Call Out Hateful Rhetoric In Wake of Belgium and Turkey Tragedies
Muslim Advocates and Media Matters for America led a diverse coalition of civil rights, advocacy, and faith groups to stand in solidarity with Belgium and Turkey after the tragic attacks of this week. In an open letter, calling for unity, the groups condemn the divisive rhetoric by public figures who have quickly targeted all Muslims simply because of their faith. Signatories to the letter include the Japanese American Citizens League, Jewish Council for Public Affairs, Church World Service, Color of Change, Labor Council for Latin American Advancement, the NAACP, Asian Americans Advancing Justice and CREDO.
The letter calls out public figures for attempts to vilify Muslims, propose discriminatory and unlawful practices, such as “patrolling” of Muslim neighborhoods, and attack refugees. Furthermore, the letter urges the media to ensure unbiased and accurate coverage that does not divide along faith lines.
