FOIA Request Overview

In July 2018, Muslim Advocates submitted a FOIA request to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (“DHS”) regarding a recent Countering Violent Extremism (“CVE”) grant awarded to the National Governors Association (“NGA”).

Muslim Advocates filed the FOIA request on the heels of the NGA’s announcement that the organization had selected Colorado, Illinois, Michigan, and Virginia as sites for its CVE “policy academies,” which have the purported purpose of “developing strategic plans for preventing ideologically-inspired violence.”
