FOIA Requests
Denaturalization FOIA
FOIA Request Overview
In January 2018, Muslim Advocates sent a Freedom of Information Act (“FOIA”) request for materials related to the federal government’s “denaturalization” efforts.
Muslim Advocates filed this FOIA request after reports that the government had ramped up efforts to denaturalize American citizens around the country. These efforts are linked with U.S. Department of Homeland Security initiatives such as Operation Janus and Operation Second Look, under which federal officials have scoured the immigration files of naturalized citizens in order to identify discrepancies that could provide a basis for seeking to revoke their citizenship status. The request was submitted to the U.S. Departments of Justice and Homeland Security.
Muslim Advocates has filed litigation seeking to compel the government to comply with this FOIA request.
