2024 In Review and the Path Forward
This year has been consequential for Muslim Advocates, marked by the anguish our communities have endured but also elevated by their bravery against enormous odds. 2024 has reminded us of the urgency of our mission: to use legal advocacy to fight discrimination, build power, and demand safety and wellbeing for the diverse communities that we represent. Your growing support has made it possible for us to be true to this mission in courts, in the Beltway, and on the frontlines
Here are just a few highlights of the work we’re honored to have done in 2024:
High-impact litigation for our communities
- Legal victory unwinding the harm of ongoing family separation for tens of thousands of people still impacted by the Muslim Ban
- Launching bold First Amendment litigation in defense of student activists decrying the genocide in Palestine and drafting coalition letters sent en masse to universities nationwide against the weaponization of material support for terrorism statutes,
- Pressuring the U.S. Department of Education through direct engagement and civil rights complaints about anti-Palestinian racism across five campuses spanning New York and North Carolina
Policy & advocacy interventions for our communities
- Putting Departments of Corrections in all 50 states on notice by sending advocacy letters developed with the Stanford Law School Religious Liberty Clinic to reinforce federal legal obligations to accommodate imprisoned Muslims during Ramadan
- Pressing the demands of our communities for the unwinding of federal policies and practices that wrongly treat our identities as threats; calling the administration to account for failing to engage those demands meaningfully; and working with partners to support the reintroduction of the NO BAN Act
- Fighting hard against proposed legislation intended to repress and punish the advocacy of nonprofits
