Muslim Advocates Condemns Biden for Reviving Trump’s Asylum Ban
Washington, DC — On Monday, Muslim Advocates submitted a comment to the U.S. Departments of Justice and Homeland Security opposing a proposed rule that would revive a Trump-era policy and make it nearly impossible for most asylum-seekers to enter the U.S. at the southwest border. Muslim Advocates joins a chorus of thousands of organizations, community leaders and activists who are calling for the Biden administration to withdraw this proposal immediately. Previously, Muslim Advocates sued both the Trump and now Biden administrations for wrongfully denying visa waivers to Muslim and African Ban victims.
The following is a statement from Muslim Advocates Staff Attorney Chris Godshall-Bennett:
“Seeking asylum is an internationally protected human right. It is shameful that the Biden administration wants to revive a racist Trump-era policy that will predominantly put Black, Brown and Indigenous people in danger. From the denial of Muslim Ban waivers to a continued effort to strip naturalized Americans of their citizenship, we are outraged that the president seems determined to pursue anti-immigrant policies motivated, at their core, by nativism and white supremacy. Muslim communities know all-too-well what happens when state power is used to target the marginalized. President Biden must withdraw this inhumane proposal immediately and use his authority to protect asylum-seekers, not gamble with their lives for political gain.”
