Washington, DC — On Tuesday, Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene posted an offensive Twitter thread filled with false, dangerous stereotypes and conspiracy theories about Muslims and Islam. The thread was posted in response to Rep. Ilhan Omar’s anti-Islamophobia bill that is currently being debated by Congress. Before being elected to Congress, Greene visited the Capitol and tried to force Reps. Omar and Rashida Tlaib to re-swear their oaths of office on a Bible instead of a Quran. Muslim Advocates is also calling on the public to demand that House Republican Leader Kevin McCarthy hold Greene and Rep. Lauren Boebert accountable for their anti-Muslim bigotry.

The following is a statement from Muslim Advocates Senior Policy Council Sumayyah Waheed:

“Rep. Greene’s hate- and conspiracy-fueled Twitter thread—stuffed with false and offensive references to Muslim terrorists, rapes by Muslim migrants and Islam preaching world domination and the death of infidels—belongs in a dictionary entry for ‘Islamophobia.’ Her ignorant and bigoted attacks against Muslims and Islam demonstrate why Rep. Ilhan Omar’s Combating International Islamophobia Act is necessary and should be passed by Congress. 

Greene’s crude stereotypes and sweeping smears of all Muslims are shocking, even for her, and will serve to encourage more hate and violence. When members of Congress use their platforms to encourage hate and fear of an entire religion, their followers listen and send hate and threats to Muslim members of Congress, to their staff and to all American Muslims.

This dangerous outburst is the direct result of House Republican Leader Kevin McCarthy’s total failure to condemn previous anti-Muslim statements from Greene and Rep. Lauren Boebert. When members of Congress are permitted to smear and encourage hate against Muslim colleagues without facing consequences, they will only double down on their bigotry. 

Reps. Omar and Rashida Tlaib regularly receive death threats because of their faith. A man came to Washington, D.C. on the day of the Jan. 6 insurrection with bombs, guns and a list that singled out Rep. André Carson as a Muslim. Marjorie Taylor Greene’s profane rant and Rep. McCarthy’s silence on the anti-Muslim hate in his caucus are pouring gasoline on this already dangerous environment. Before something terrible happens, congressional leaders must finally act and hold Rep. Greene and Boebert accountable for spreading and encouraging anti-Muslim hate.”
