Marjorie Taylor Greene Leans into Anti-Muslim Bigotry to Save Her Job

Washington, DC — Today, Muslim Advocates responded to efforts to hijack the legitimate process of removing Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene from committee assignments by attacking Rep. Ilhan Omar—an effort led by several anti-Muslim members of Congress. In addition to suggesting that top Democrats be executed, Rep. Greene also suggested that Muslims do not belong in government, tried to force Rep. Ilhan Omar and Rashida Tlaib to re-swear their congressional oaths on a Bible and even posted a picture of herself holding a gun next to them. The following is a statement from Muslim Advocates Public Advocacy Director Scott Simpson:

“Muslim members of Congress are facing legitimate threats on their lives because of the bigotry espoused by Rep. Greene and her allies in Congress. She has repeatedly singled out Muslim members of Congress because of their faith and broadcast multiple false, dangerous conspiracy theories about Muslims.

Now that there is a chance that Rep. Greene may face some small consequence for her actions, she is hoping that bigotry will save her. Members of Congress must not let that happen.

Rep. Greene suggested that Nancy Pelosi should be killed. She endorsed conspiracy theories denying 9/11, the Sandy Hook shooting and the Parkland shooting. She has posted a video suggesting that Jews are behind a plot to flood Europe with Muslim immigrants. There is absolutely no equivalence between Marjorie Taylor Greene and Ilhan Omar. This Republican tactic suggesting one is clearly just a distraction and another attempt to hold a Muslim member of Congress to a double standard.

We applaud efforts to remove Marjorie Taylor Greene from House committees, but that is not enough. She should be expelled from Congress. Every minute that she remains in office is a minute where André Carson, Ilhan Omar, Rashida Tlaib, their colleagues and their staff in Congress are in danger.”
