Ahead of Rally, Muslim Advocates Urges Trump to Stop Repeat of Bigoted ‘Send her Back’ Chants

WASHINGTON, DC — Today, Muslim Advocates released the following statement from Muslim Advocates Executive Director Farhana Khera ahead of President Trump’s campaign rally in Cincinnati, Ohio. This is the president’s first rally since his attacks on Rep. Ilhan Omar incited a crowd of thousands to chant “send her back.” Farhana Khera is available for interviews. If you would like to speak to her, email [email protected] or call (202) 670-9560.

“For the safety of Congresswomen Ilhan Omar and Rashida Tlaib and all American Muslims, President Trump must revoke the license to hate that he has provided his supporters. The president’s bigoted, anti-Muslim attacks have already inspired death threats directed at Rep. Omar and caused thousands of angry Trump supporters to chant ‘send her back’ at his most recent campaign rally. This cannot happen again.

We have already seen President Trump waffle back and forth about whether the ‘send her back’ chant was harmful and whether he would stop it in the future. It’s shameful and cowardly that he would play coy with conduct that is so deadly serious. Only the president can stop this, and it is his responsibility to do so.

Should it happen again, the president must immediately and unequivocally shut down this hate.”

Muslim Advocates is a national civil rights organization working in the courts, in the halls of power and in communities to halt bigotry in its tracks. We ensure that American Muslims have a seat at the table with expert representation so that all Americans may live free from hate and discrimination.
