Issue: Muslim Ban
300 Muslim Advocates, Allies, Members of Congress, and Leaders Gather at the Supreme Court to Declare #WeWillNotBeBanned
Washington, DC – Today, immediately following the atrocious Supreme Court decision in Trump v. State of Hawai’i – the lawsuit against President Trump’s long-promised, and unpopular, Muslim Ban – over 80 co-sponsoring organizations and about 300 Muslims, allies, members of Congress, and leaders gathered outside the court to declare that #WeWillNotBeBanned. The livestream was viewed almost 160,000 times. The action was jointly led by Muslim Advocates and the Justice for Muslims Collective.
According to Farhana Khera, executive director of Muslim Advocates, “The solidarity demonstrated today on the steps of the Supreme Court was seen nationwide. Today’s decision is clearly unpopular and unrepresentative of the America that so many of us know. We will continue to fight for the families still imperiled by this reckless ruling. We will continue to fight in the courts, and we will urge our members of Congress and the people to serve as a meaningful check on the administration.”
Congressional speakers at today’s event included: Senators Richard Blumenthal (D-CT), Cory Booker (D-NJ), Mazie Hirono (D-HI), and Jeff Merkley (D-OR), and Representatives Nanette Barragán (CA-44), Don Beyer (VA-08), Salud Carbajal (CA-24), Andre Carson (IN-07), Debbie Dingell (MI-12), Jimmy Gomez (CA-34), Sheila Jackson Lee (TX-18), Joe Kennedy III (MA-04), Ruben Kihuen (NV-04), Barbara Lee (CA-13), Jan Schakowsky (IL-09), and Nydia Velázquez (NY-07).
