Muslim Advocates’ Farhana Khera Responds to SOTU

“Together, we will continue to fight these unprecedented attacks on our American way of life.”

Washington, DC – The following is a statement from Farhana Khera, executive director of Muslim Advocates, in reaction to President Donald Trump’s inaugural State of the Union. For media inquiries, please contact Scott Simpson at [email protected].

“The America we stand for embraces all of its people and families. That is not the America that President Trump championed tonight.

He pit American citizens against Dreamers, cast immigrants as murderous gang members lurking in the shadows, and used terror attacks to justify his anti-Muslim and anti-immigrant agenda.

The America we stand for cherishes the Constitution and its promises of equal protection under the law and due process. That is not the America that President Trump championed tonight either.

Tonight, he announced his decision to keep Guantanamo Bay open, where prisoners will continue to be detained without the due process guaranteed by the Constitution.

The America we stand for was not on display at the podium tonight, but it was on display in the actions of people nationwide who continue to make their voices heard; who continue to fight for Dreamers; and continue to fight for pluralism, religious freedom, and dignity for all.

Together, we will continue to fight these unprecedented attacks on our American way of life.”
